Are you planning to get a puppy, already have one or looking to rehome a dog, and wanting to set them up for success, and most of all, ensure safety and support for your new dog?
Nearly 6 years ago, we brought home our first puppy. With the best intentions, we could never have foreseen: Covid Lockdown, her getting attacked at 5 months old, mast cell tumour at 7 months old, another attack a few months later, not to mention me being completely overwhelmed by my chronic pain and health status. Like all dog guardians, we did what we could, what we thought was best, with the knowledge we had at the time, following the best training advice we found. It wasn't working for our now 'reactive' (struggling) dog. For her, I delved into researching how we can make things better, tried multiple training programmes - some excellent, some not so much - but they weren't the right option for her. They didn't help the underlying root cause.
Dogs don't need to have a traumatic life like hers to struggle and rely on coping mechanisms - just a small disruption in their early stages, even when we're doing our very best, following all the standard guidelines, can cause their need for coping mechanisms - just like we might turn to smoking, vaping, drinking, over-eating, constantly fidgeting, cleaning or biting our nails... These are all coping mechanisms, and if you have some, you'll know that if you're stopped from doing one, another will take its' place - this is what we see in dogs. Stopping one coping strategy only to have another, often more disruptive one, take it's place.
We then adopted a dog that was in need of a home: His story is on my Facebook Page . Long story short, we were a prime example that a rescue dog in their own home and even in the first days, weeks, sometimes months in their new home - is NOT the dog you will be getting. Fully aware of his guarding issues which were remedied in a few weeks, Odin was terrified of women, and his initial good relationship with our other dog took a big turn for the worse. In the end it took nearly 6 months for a female person to be able to enter a room and him not to react, and 9 months of gradual building for the dogs to live together 24/7. 3 years on, we're still working on him, and our other dog, and we still have good and bad days. I very affectionately call my dogs d!ckheads - but they're free to express their emotions, seek support and be themselves - on the good days and the struggling days - just as they are.
We've been on a healing journey together ever since, in addition to the masses of rabbit holes of information I've delved in to to find the best possible help for our family!
This experience along with that gained helping others to build better relationships and support systems in their household, allows me to empathise and guide you in helping your dog, building that place of safety for them.
I am a trainee in the Hemene Approach to Dog Development. With specialised and expert mentorship from Kim and Shaun Ellis of The Wolf and Dog Development Centre, plus an international network of Instructors to draw experience from, the journey for you and your dog to build that life-long close understanding relationship and to repair those disruptions at the core of the behaviours you are seeing, starts here.
Hemene is a word that comes from the First Nations People the Nez Perce.
It has 2 meanings:
-
Wolf
-
We are One, We are the Same. - We are connected
With this approach, we draw on lessons learnt from the wolf, to support and take your dog back through early stages of development - from the den site, to expanding their world and building their confidence with you at the core for safety and support - and guess what: There's not a hint of pack leader, alpha or dominance in sight. Forget what you know, or think you know, and immerse yourself in a world you never knew you needed.
View our introductory free recorded webinar - essential viewing prior to enrolment, and I guarantee you some lightbulb moments and some tips you can implement straight away.

Fully supported programmes to suit your budget, set realistic timelines to work from and guide you through healing the gaps in your dogs' development that could have any number of unknown causes. Loss is often a factor here: A puppy leaving it's mum has suffered a loss, a re-homed dog has suffered a loss - in our mind we've just provided them with an amazing forever home! To them, they've just lost everything they knew - when we empathise with this, we can start to understand that we don't even need to do anything 'wrong' for these gaps to appear and coping mechanisms to set in. When you're doing your best with the knowledge you have, it is not your fault.
My longer programmes set the expectation of the time needed to support your dog in working through the underlying causes that now result in undesirable behaviours - they will thank you for learning how to understand and support them.
If you're doing everything 'right' as per modern dog training, and they still just can't (key word, they're not stubborn, it's not they 'won't') make progress - it's time to look at the root cause.
I support dog guardians in building relational connection - a deeper bond - with your dog, enabling you to have a better understanding and for them to learn that you can provide the safety they need. We look at the root causes behind the behaviours you see and work at a developmental level to resolve these, over traditional training that often band-aids problems, or closes down behaviour while the underlying problem still sits there waiting to resurface. There is absolutely a place for modern, science based positive training for people who choose to with well regulated dogs, but for a lot of dogs the underlying causes need to be supported first.
All behaviour, everything a dog does from chewing the doorway and jumping up, to playing with their dog friend or humping your aunt Judith, to lying on your side of the bed or poking your visitors with a ball constantly unable to settle is communication - we can understand a lot from them if we remove the notion of being 'naughty' or 'bad' or without purpose - and start understanding what they are showing us. Part of this journey is learning to understand your dogs' language, building your relationship, listening to their story and getting you on the same page!

Suitable for all dogs:
Puppies: Start before they come home. Learn how to choose a puppy that'll suit your lifestyle, then set them up for success and learn how to create a safe environment and develop a strong unconditional bond and source of safety, before you take them out into the world without knowing that you're their safe place, wherever you are! Preparing your puppy and ensuring they have all the skills they need, and all the skills that YOU need to support them, will save you a potential lifetime of undesirable behaviours and the costs that come with repairing those behaviours. Spending the time and effort now, will save you a small fortune in the future.
Re-homed dogs: Whatever their history, good or bad, when a dog is rehomed (puppies included) they suffer a loss. This alone can cause a developmental gap - add to that a poor history and it's no wonder our beloved adopted pups struggle so much. Re-homed dogs often mask how they're feeling for the first few days, weeks or even months, with their true feelings showing and undesirable behaviours emerging weeks and months down the line, when we wonder what went wrong?! - set them up for success from the second you get them home.
Adult dogs: If your adolescent or adult dog you've had from a puppy is struggling, despite your best efforts, there can be very simple but impactful reasons why. It's important to understand that it's likely not your fault, or at least nothing you were aware of - we only know what we know, and we can do all the training, read all the books and still come up short, blaming ourselves or the dog - a tiny developmental gap in their early weeks of life, or in their first few weeks in your home (remember, they've suffered a loss leaving mum), can shape the course of their life no matter what training you do.
The good news whether you have a re-homed dog, a puppy, or a dog that has just struggled since a puppy or after a traumatic event, is that we can go back and repair this gap, no matter the age of the dog.
It takes time, it can be hard work. Our emotional state can have a big impact on our dogs, which means being open to become more self aware is an important part. It may mean working on yourself too as your dog potentially draws out thoughts, feelings and struggles you've previously locked away - but the act of progressing and growing together with your dog will create the most beautiful partnership, and a point where 'training' isn't required because your dog will naturally: walk beside you, see you as the most interesting thing in the park, recall to you, come to you when they're worried for support and live a far more harmonious life. Put in the time now so that the remaining years with your dog are simpler and less stressful for you both.

Your questions answered
HOW DO I KNOW IF THIS PROGRAMME IS RIGHT FOR MY DOG AND I?
Before I accept any booking, we will have an in person meeting of 1.5-2 hours at your home to discuss your dog, your home life, your expectations and your support system, go over what the programme entails, what to expect in terms of how you will need to adjust for your dog, and the potential for changes in behaviour as they progress. For puppies, we want to do this meeting while you're on the waiting list ideally - or before puppy comes home. Of course we can start this with puppies at any point, but prevention and setting you up for success is always the best option! This initial assessment and informative greeting is £95
HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE?
Depending on the stage they are at, and it's essential we meet them at their starting point, this process has no set timeline, and could be anything from 6 months to 2+ years. Everything goes at the dogs pace, it cannot be pushed or strategised. No deadline can be set - so if you're open to giving your dog the time they need to heal, and to heal alongside them (because you can't fake a safe nervous system), in order to give them their best life with you, book in your initial consult and embark on this journey together!
If you're getting a puppy - the time you put in now, slowing things down, can give you a lifetime of enjoyable experiences and partnership.
Even if your dog is 5, 7, 10 years old - if you could give them safety and peace for their remaining years, I don't know about you but I think that's worth everything.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 6, 9 & 12 MONTH PACKAGES
Simply: Value for money. Dogs will take as long as they take and for most dogs with struggles, 6 months is not enough. These programmes are designed to make the timescale realistic. See below for your your money is protected should you only need a part-package.
MY DOG DOESN'T LIKE VISITORS DOES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Yes and no. If your dog is feeling like this in your home, then this process is what your dog needs to heal from their past - you can absolutely work through this. I don't need to work with your dog - I need to work with you, so in extreme cases, firstly understand that you'll be looking at a longer recovery purely because your dog is in survival mode right now, but we can start with zoom calls for the support 'visits'. We can also, prior to beginning this programme, do relationship building visits so that your dog can learn to be comfortable, or at the least tolerate, my presence in your home while you start to learn to support them. This would be separate from these programmes. There is no need for me to be present if it will cause your dog distress - you will get to a point in your dogs' healing where we can introduce me slowly. It may be that we need a combination of relationship building and zoom calls until they have healed enough to do support sessions in person. We can tailor this to your dogs' needs. We can also do our initial meet away from your dog - or if they can meet people away from the home, then we can arrange a meeting in a private hall or secure field - somewhere the weather supports a reasonable conversation!
I HAVE 2 DOGS - WHAT DO I DO?
We generally work on one dogs development at a time, because changing the emotional state of one can change their relationship. If we work to change both at once, it could lead to bigger problems in the house with their relationship. It is also difficult for for 1 person to fully emotionally support 2 dogs. It can seem unfair, but we have a greater chance of success this way. We choose by the dogs' character if known, and their dynamic - not by which dog needs more/less help.
IS THERE A PAYMENT PLAN OPTION?
Yes -however payment will need to be received in full before commencement. Your payment will be kept safe until the start date. Full refund offered until 30 days before start date, within 30 days, the refund will be less equivalent 1 month's breakdown cost. Cost is required in full as part of the understanding that this isn't a quick fix, you are committing to the time your dog needs. You can extend to a 2nd package if needed.
WHAT IF I HAVE A DOG THAT NEEDS HELP RIGHT NOW?
Please still get in touch, our Instructor Community support network may mean I can assist immediately, on the understanding that some of the community benefits will not be available yet, but full personal support is at hand.
CAN YOU GUARANTEE TO HEAL MY DOG?
Short answer: No. Whether you choose a modern positive trainer, a behaviourist, or our approach to dog development, no one can guarantee you a result when it comes to underlying root causes.
Working at this base level is your dogs' best option, you could think of it as therapy where we learn your dogs' story and support them through healing. This can take an emotional toll on you - and you may find you need to take breaks and adjust your thinking or take time to yourself so that you can continue to give to your dogs' emotional needs. It's ok to pause the process in your home. While I am here to guide and support you, and show you how this should look, ultimately it is your relationship and support of your dog, your ability to regulate and adapt, that will make the difference.
I HAVE SOME PHYSICAL AND/OR MENTAL STRUGGLES AND/OR NEURODIVERSITY, WHAT IF I CAN'T SUPPORT MY DOG BECAUSE I CAN'T STAY REGULATED?
When we first meet, if this is a concern then we would firstly be looking at your support system. I can share info of my own struggles with my health, chronic pain, neurodiversity and how I worked through these - I'm still working through it ongoing myself. Our own emotional states impact our dogs, so being mindful of how we're feeling is key. It's ok to say "I'm not in a place to support you today" to them, or only have a few minutes of connection with them, or 1 spoon to give them... As long as we are being authentic with how we're feeling, they understand that. What doesn't work, is trying to tell them they should be safe and calm, when our own nervous system is feeling the opposite - you can hopefully see that this is a healing journey you will be taking together, and you'll find where you meet each other now, and you'll steadily grow together. It may bring a realisation that you may need to seek some outside help from a professional, or if you're already seeing a therapist or health professional, you'll be able to highlight new things to come up. Whatever you're feeling, it is valid and there's no judgement. I see you, and while this is a programme to help your dog - they'll be helping you too!. Our dogs have this amazing way of challenging us in a way that if we're open to it, we will see where we need to heal ourselves. I doubt there's a single person who embarks on this who won't need to look into themselves and deal with a few hard truths. You can still start work with your dog, every programme is different and tailored to you. It may mean that you need additional in person help to assist with the tactile/physical support of your dog, or that you need to take it slower, or have little breaks to regain your spoons, in which case we can look at how that would change things for you. The key point is this: If you are open to looking at yourself in order to help your dog, and to grow in this, then there is no reason why this won't work for you - we adjust to your needs and if you go in to this with authenticity, that's all that truly matters to your dog.
WHAT IF I DECIDE IT'S NOT FOR ME AFTER A MONTH?
My place is to support you without judgement of the past or present. The background you came from, your emotional state, the ingrained learning you may have - none of that matters if you're open to changing to be what your dog needs you to be. Your dog may bring up challenges in you that you're not ready to deal with, and that's ok. Sometimes the best thing we can do is simply say 'I can't be what you need right now' and return to the place you were at - however you will have opened a door into looking at yourself, and should you choose to do some personal healing, the door here is always open.
There can also be a point where you can't see that you've reached a block, you're becoming frustrated and wanting everything to happen faster because it can be overwhelming - at this point I'll raise with the barrier you're facing and we can either pause, or stop, depending on what you need to move forward.
Should this be the case, you can choose to pause, or if you wish to walk away for now, please note that the cost of the foundation course is none-refundable (£540 special rate) your remaining refund option would be *Full amount less time spent rounded up to full month + 1 month, less foundation course cost* : Example. You pay for 6 months, you leave 20 days into 1st month. 2nd month is forfeit as I won't replace you in that time. Your refund would equal 4 months value less £540. You would continue to have access to The Foundation Course for the 4 months as this is paid for.
WHAT IF I PAY FOR 12 MONTHS AND MY DOG IS AT A HEALED PLACE AFTER 9 MONTHS?
If your dog reaches a level where they're genuinely set up for success earlier than estimated, In our experience, most people want to continue community support, and would put their outstanding costs into this, or cut down their (example) 6 remaining visits in 3 months, to 1 supporting visit per month over 6 months. Dogs don't just wake up one day fully 100% A-OK - you'll reach a point where you feel there is balance and connection in your day to day lives - things generally seem great, but having guidance while that becomes the new normal for you can keep things going towards your dogs' progress, and support you if you have a bad day/week/traumatic event. If you do want a refund for the remainder, please see the above example.
Please get in touch if you have any other queries.
